Drop Shot Strategy

  • Cross Court Drop with Staggered Transition
  • Aim at opponents inside foot to the sideline-  big enough target
  • Non Hitting Partner watches Hitting Partner make contact and then moves forward accordingly looking for poach
  • Both Partners watch the player receiving the 3rd shot to determine what may come back – Red, Yellow, Green
  • Approaching partner pinches middle slightly but watches for behind shot
  • Down the Line Drop Shots – less stagger, less aggressive, be ready for defense mid court

Watch this video from Head Pro Suzee Anderson on transitioning:  Transitioning- When to Move Forward

Fourth Shot Strategy

  • Stepping Back or Out of the Air- Height Dependent- don’t go too low
  • Receiving a Drive – Put it back at who just hit it- they are still moving most likely and easier to pressure
  • Receiving a Drop – Mirror the Angle- Cross Court to Cross Court
  • Mid paced ball- not really a drop or drive – Push them back!  Don’t invite them in

Drive, Drop, Surprise Drill

  • Set up 3 cones: 1 at baseline, 1 at transition zone, 1 at NVZ.
  • 1 partner stands at NVZ with 3 balls and tosses a ball to each cone zone.
    • Ball #1- Shallow and High for Drive
    • Ball #2 – Low- Drop
    • Ball #3 – at NVZ – Surprise them- Dink or Smash
  • Focus is on shifting gears and being focused and deliberate through transition

The Approach Game Drill

  • Player 1 at NVZ, Player 2 at Baseline
  • Player 1 feeds balls to Player 2 – this is mimicking the return of serve
  • player 2 makes choice of drop or drive and moves forward to play out the point
  • Net Player focusing on 4th shot
  • Baseline Player focusing on Transitioning
  • Possesion scoring- Baseline player is the scoring player.  If they lose rally it is a side out and you switch who is at NVZ and Baseline
